about

A grand journey spanning 70 years of music, The Examination serves as both a tribute to the artists that have inspired the sound of Gothik Serpent, as well as research and development for the next project.

Beginning their journey at the Rhinegold, listeners are suddenly transported a century forward into the beginnings of rock and roll with the rugged and earnest "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash. As the journey progresses into the 1960s, the groundbreaking art-pop sensibilities of The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" take over, followed by the rough-and-tumble 70s grit of CCR's "Ramble Tamble" and King Crimson's "Red", an early precursor of heavy metal.

From there, the next stop is the synth-soaked 80s in the form of Rush's "Manhattan Project", a rare example of a historical rock song. This is followed by the 90s industrial funk of Frank Klepacki's "Workmen", off the soundtrack of the strategy game Command & Conquer: Red Alert.

As The Examination enters the 2000s, the eclectic sounds of Porcupine Tree's "The Sound of Muzak" and "Sleep Together" dominate a decade in which production techniques crystallized into what they are today. As the journey reaches its final destination at the 2010s, the monolithic sonic onslaught of Rush's "BU2B" pummels the listener before the final act that is Hans Zimmer's "Supermarine". Comprising nearly 100 instrument tracks, this cover of the climactic song off the 2017 movie Dunkirk is by far the most elaborate and complex undertaking by Gothik Serpent.

Covering progressive rock, hard rock, blues, pop, country, industrial, heavy metal, and orchestral, The Examination is a labor of love and a graduation to new levels of musical sophistication.

about

Gothik Serpent Singapore

To paraphrase Robert Fripp, Gothik Serpent is a way of doing things. The sound of this project is best described as modern, progressive, and album-oriented, with songs that are highly composed and musically dense. GS's songwriter, bassist and stickist, Kerwin Tsang, has been playing music for since 2007. ... more
